About Us: Good Energy Collective – Elevating Voices for a Sustainable Future
Good Energy Collective is on a mission to advance clean energy as a pathway to social and environmental justice. We aim to reach diverse audiences through impactful, inclusive messaging that inspires action. We’re looking for a passionate Strategic Communications Manager who understands the power of storytelling and strategic advocacy to join us in amplifying our impact.

The Opportunity: A Vital Role in Advocacy and Brand Building
As the Strategic Communications Manager, you’ll lead and execute the organization’s communication strategy, developing powerful messages and campaigns that connect with communities and build our brand. This role is ideal for someone who knows how to bring policy to life through clear, engaging narratives and is eager to elevate Good Energy Collective’s voice across multiple platforms.

As a research organization and think tank, clearly communicating our perspective is core to GEC’s impact strategy. Communication strategy is not an afterthought. The Strategic Communications Manager creates internal touchpoints with technical teams to ensure that GEC’s perspective is intentionally curated and manages a strategic communications plan to translate that perspective into a coherent public point of view.

Reporting initially to the Executive Director and transitioning to the Director of External Affairs (mid-year), you’ll collaborate closely with our policy and operations teams to ensure our messaging resonates with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including policymakers, partners, and the public. This role will also include managing one direct report, a Creative Strategist.

What You’ll Do: Your Impact and Influence

Strategic Planning & Data-Driven Approach

  • Strategic Planning: As part of GEC-wide perennial strategic planning processes, lead GEC’s communication strategic plan, incremental updates to the plan, plan monitoring, and related process development.
  • Process Development: Work with GEC leadership to create and implement cross-departmental processes that ensure workflow touch points for the communications team throughout technical work streams.
  • Monitoring: Maintain planning and tracking processes to ensure all public-facing GEC communications align with communications plans.
  • Analyze & Refine: Monitor performance metrics across communication channels to inform content strategy and improve engagement.
  • Innovate: Stay updated on communications and policy trends to drive innovation in our messaging approach and expand our impact.

Editorial Supervision

  • Establish Editorial Standards: Develop editorial standards for all categories of GEC outputs. Develop and train staff on procedures for integrating editorial standard intent throughout content development processes.
  • Manage Publication Queues: Manage feedback processes to ensure strategic fit and voice for all GEC outputs throughout content development life cycles. Manage release process to ensure consistent and maximal impact across GEC’s work.
  • Co-lead “Marquee” Products: Co-develop all marquee GEC products with product owners, working hand-in-glove to maximize impact.

Content Development & Brand Positioning

  • Craft Compelling Content: Lead content creation across digital platforms, newsletters, press releases, and public statements that articulate Good Energy Collective’s mission and impact.
  • Shape Our Voice: Develop messaging that positions Good Energy Collective as a leading voice in clean energy advocacy, creating materials tailored to resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Partnerships and Networks: Establish and maintain partnerships that serve to amplify GEC’s voice and drive impact.
  • Campaign Development: Design and manage strategic communication campaigns to drive awareness, support advocacy efforts, and advance our organizational goals.
  • Logistics: Manage relationships with external vendors related to communications, public relations, and publicity.

Media Relations & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build Media Connections: Cultivate relationships with journalists and manage press outreach to expand Good Energy Collective’s media presence and amplify key messages.
  • Strengthen Stakeholder Communication: Engage directly with stakeholders to build a consistent and compelling brand narrative that supports organizational goals.
  • Oversee Social Media Strategy: Lead social media engagement, creating and curating content to increase visibility, engagement, and brand alignment.

Who You Are: Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8 years of work experience with 5+ years in communications, public relations, or media, with a preference for nonprofit or advocacy sector experience.
  • Editorial: Significant experience providing editorial guidance and developing processes that set clear expectations for the editorial process.
  • Strategy: Experience with strategic planning processes and familiarity with the basics of the strategy planning process.
  • Process Development and Project Management: Experience developing routine cross-departmental processes and managing complex projects in line with project management best practices.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in social media management platforms, content creation tools, and CRM software.
  • Creativity & Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to craft impactful narratives that engage and inspire.
  • Commitment: A deep alignment with Good Energy Collective’s mission to promote clean energy and social equity and an eagerness to advocate for these values.

Approach to Compensation | Fairness Over Negotiation

We get it; the topic of salary often turns into a negotiation game. But here at Good Energy Collective, we’re taking a different approach—one rooted in fairness and internal equity.

For the Strategic Communications Manager role, the salary range is $100,000 - $115,000, with a midpoint of $107,500. Starting offers are set at 95% of the midpoint, or $102,125.

Our salary bands are intentionally wide to provide ample room for growth without requiring a change in title. It’s our way of saying, “We value your growth right where you are, and we want to reward you for it.” We recognize that negotiation often favors certain demographic groups, and we’re committed to leveling the playing field. We want every candidate from every background to know they’re being valued fairly for their skills and potential.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
